The Italian Textile Industry

Italy’s textile industry is undergoing a transformation, balancing between modernisation and technological advancements. The industry must also address two crucial issues: the evolution towards a sustainable production system and digitisation of the supply chain.

As ITMA is the world's leading exhibition of textile and garment technology, it offers integrated solutions for the entire manufacturing value chain. So, we were able to meet many new contacts who were at the show not only to source for machinery but raw materials at the same time. We have made plans to participate in the next ITMA.

As a material developer at IKEA, the Speakers Platform supplemented my visit to ITMA 2019 with a comprehensive picture of the textile world, especially the insights and developments that improve the existing industry or disrupt the future. There was an interesting contrast between learning from exhibitors about the features of their machines and hearing from experts about research results that showed more circular and humanistic perspectives. It was inspiring, for example, to hear from Philipp Sievers about measuring and communicating textile ‘softness’ based on human skin contact, as well as Yoel Fink sharing AFFOA´s vision on textiles as the new software.

The Sustainable Apparel Coalition hosted one of its manufacturer forums at ITMA this year and planned its annual global member meeting around ITMA. It was a pleasure to work with the wonderful ITMA team, who ensured the SAC-ZDHC Manufacturer Forum was a great success. Offering the SAC events in conjunction with this international industry showcase gave our audiences an opportunity to connect with value chain partners, meet other industry leaders, and explore the latest machinery and technologies that support sustainable practices.
